Description
The Director of Operations is responsible for overseeing the operations and performance of a dedicated manufacturing facility or “focus factory” that specializes in the production of a specific product line or family. This role ensures the focus factory meets or exceeds production goals, quality standards, and cost targets while promoting a culture of continuous improvement, safety, and employee engagement. The Director of Operations works closely with cross-functional teams to optimize processes, address bottlenecks, and drive operational excellence.
Primary Duties
- Develop and implement strategies to improve the focus factory’s productivity, efficiency and overall performance
- Oversee all aspects of manufacturing operations, including production planning, capacity management and inventory control
- Monitor and analyze key performance indicators (KPIs) such as output, quality, cycle time and equipment utilization
- Identify and resolve production issues, process inefficiencies, and supply chain disruptions in a timely manner
- Implement lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies, and other continuous improvement initiatives
- Manage the focus factory’s budget, allocate resources, and make data-driven decisions to optimize costs
- Collaborate with engineering, quality, and maintenance teams to ensure equipment and processes are optimized
- Lead, motivate, and develop the focus factory’s workforce, fostering a culture of safety, accountability and continuous learning
- Establish and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, customers and cross-functional stakeholders
- Provide regular reports and recommendations to senior management on the focus factory’s performance and strategic initiatives
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, manufacturing, operations management, or a related field
- 7+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role
- Thorough understanding of lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies
- Proven track record of driving operational excellence and delivering measurable improvements in productivity, quality, and cost efficiency
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and project management skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams
- Proficient in using manufacturing execution systems (MES), enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, and data analysis tools
- Knowledge of the focus factory’s product line, industry, and competitive landscape is preferred
- Advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., PMP, CPIM, Lean Six Sigma) is a plus
